James M. Lang Blog: Occasional reflections on higher education, religion, literature, and music

On Course

Teaching and Speaking
I am an Associate Professor of English, and the Director of the College Honors Program, at Assumption College.

I give frequent workshops and lectures on teaching in higher education. In the fall of 2011 I gave the keynote at a
teaching conference at the University of Houston and visited Oxford College at Emory University. In the late spring of 2012 I will be back at Oxford for their Institute of Pedagogy in the Liberal Arts; in June I will be on the faculty of Ken Bain's Best Teachers Summer Institute. August 2012 is shaping up to be a particulary busy month, with keynote talks at Western Kentucky Community and Technical College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

I am a member of the
Fulbright Specialist Program's roster from 2011-2016. Overseas institutions interested in putting together a proposal should consult the website for information on how to request a roster specialist.
Writing
I write a monthly column on teaching and learning for The Chronicle of Higher Education. I have written three books: On Course: A Week-by-Week Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching (Harvard UP, 2008), Life on the Tenure Track: Lessons from the First Year (Johns Hopkins UP, 2005), and Learning Sickness: A Year with Crohn's Disease (Capital Books, 2004). I am currently at work on a book about cheating in higher education, which is scheduled for publication in 2013 by Harvard University Press. My personal essays and nonfiction writing have appeared in lots of places, from The Boston Globe and Chicago Tribune to America and Notre Dame Magazine.
