Keynote Speakers

Dr. Christy Price, Professor of Psychology
Dalton State College

Extreme Arousal 2.0: Creating “I Don’t Want to Miss a Moment of This!” Learning Environments

In this discouraging climate fraught with student apathy and disinterest are there courses and professors who inspire students to attend and engage? The answer is YES! Obviously there are some influences beyond the professor’s control, but research in educational psychology suggests there are things professors can do to increase students’ willingness to attend class, their ability to maintain interest, and their desire to learn As college professors, we are all experts in our content area. However, we may not be aware of the body of research within educational psychology that provides insights into motivating our students. During this presentation we will briefly review the literature regarding student motivation and share the findings of Dr. Price's own research on this topic. Throughout the presentation, participants will be encouraged to reflect on the learning environments they create. Digitized video clips of student interviews will be utilized in order to convey practical steps we can take to increase student motivation, interest, and desire to learn in the courses we teach.

A professor of psychology at Dalton State College, Christy Price has been teaching at the collegiate level for 20 years. Dr. Price won the Excellence in Teaching Award at Dalton State in 2007, and the University System of Georgia Teaching Excellence Award in the Two & Four-Year College sector for 2008/2009. She was also honored by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition as an Outstanding First-Year Student Advocates for 2009. Christy also won the 2010 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching U.S. Professor Award for the state of Georgia. Dr. Price's awards are, in part, a result of her use of innovative strategies in assisting students to achieve learning outcomes. Her dynamic and interactive style make Dr. Price a favorite as a professor and presenter. She regularly presents as a keynote speaker and leads workshops at faculty development seminars and retreats. As a recipient of an institutional foundation grant award, Dr. Price has studied teaching techniques that influence student motivation. Her most recent research focuses on engaging Millennial learners and preventing incivility in the classroom Christy has completed post-doctoral work in educational psychology from Georgia State University. She holds a doctorate in community health from the University of Tennessee, a master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, and a bachelor's degree in social services from Northern Illinois University.

Dr. Tom Pusateri, Professor of Psychology

Associate Director for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Kennesaw State University
Relighting the Fire: Promoting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning on Your Campus

In their recent book, The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Reconsidered, Hutchings, Huber, and Ciccone (2011) argue that the scholarship of teaching and learning can advance four goals in higher education: improved classroom teaching, support for faculty professional development, meaningful institutional assessment, and proper recognition and reward for faculty contributions to student learning. During this session, Dr. Pusateri will invite participants to reflect on their own institution's commitment to these goals and share strategies for promoting the scholarship of teaching and learning on our campuses.

Tom Pusateri received his Ph.D. in social psychology from The Ohio State University in 1984. From 1984 through 2003, he taught at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, where he attained the rank of Professor and served terms as Chair of the Psychology Department and Assessment Director for the college. From 2003 through 2006, he served as Assessment Director at Florida Atlantic University, where he received the 2005 President's Leadership Award for administrative service to the institution. In 2006, he was appointed Associate Director for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning at Kennesaw State University. On behalf of KSU, he submitted successful applications for the Council of Higher Education Accreditation's 2008 CHEA Award for Institutional Progress in Student Learning Outcomes and for NAFSA's 2011 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. From 2000 through 2007, he served as the first Executive Director of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP); in 2007 he received recognition from the STP President for "sustained significant contributions to the Society." Tom has numerous presentations and publications related to teaching pedagogy and assessment. In March 2012, Tom will be honored as a recipient of the University System of Georgia's Regents' Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
