Preserving the Story of the HBCU Library Alliance - January/February American Libraries (Mon)
Greetings Colleagues,
I trust you’re well today. Today I’m celebrating, with great excitement, the Preserving the Story grant! As you know, this is the first direct award to the HBCU Library Alliance. The goals of the project are two-fold: to document the history and contributions of the HBCU Library Alliance to the field of librarianship and to the larger field of education, and to document and disseminate the success stories of nine libraries at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Major outcomes of this project include increasing the visibility of the Alliance, acquiring experience to secure grants and new funding sources, and increasing opportunities for organizational sustainability.
The first two success stories have been published in the January/February issue of American Libraries and are attached to this e-mail. I thoroughly enjoyed reading both stories and am especially proud of this significant work. The remaining seven stories will be published in Against the Grain.
Many thanks to Project Writer/Coordinator Dr. Shanesha Brooks-Tatum for her talent and expertise. Thanks are also in order for Board Chair Mary Jo Fayoyin, Savannah State University (GA), Founding Committee Members Loretta Parham, Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library (GA), Dr. Janice Franklin, Alabama State University, Elsie Weatherington, Virginia State University, and Emma Perry, Southern University and A&M College (LA). Their knowledge and history of the Alliance provided a framework for Dr. Tatum as she began her research.
Your assistance is requested as we use these articles to increase the visibility of the Alliance. As often you can, and in as many settings as you can, share these success story articles. Share them with your library staff, student body, faculty, and university committees. Make certain that your Chancellor, Provost or President has a copy of the articles. Let’s continue to spread the message of our work to the broader academic community.

Conference 2012 - International Collaborative Writing Groups
As part of the ISSOTL 2012 Conference hosted by the Centre for Leadership in Learning at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, colleagues are invited to apply to participate to join a year long international collaborative writing group. The deadline for applications is by 28 February 2012.
There will be nine groups, each of which will prepare and write an article during 2012-13 on a pre-selected topic about SOTL for submission for publication. Each group will have six or seven members chaired by a facilitator familiar with the chosen topic. Ideally each group will include one student member. Each group may have one group member who is unable to participate face to face at the two-day pre-ISSOTL workshop.
The groups will work at a distance to prepare a 2000 word outline for discussion running up to the workshop. They will meet in Hamilton at the main conference hotel for the two days preceding the start of the main conference (Monday and Tuesday 22-23 October 2012) during which they will spend time preparing their draft paper within their group and in discussion with participants of other groups. There will also be some social activities as part of the workshop. Following the workshop the groups will have two months to complete and send in their papers for submission to an international SOTL journal. It is planned to have a session within the main conference for participants to share their experiences of the initiative with other conference delegates.
An important aim of the initiative is to build the capacity of participants to work and write in international collaborative groups. Hence enthusiasm and interest in the topic and for the process of writing collaboratively in international groups are at least as important as prior experience with the topic.
This process has been used successfully by the International Network for Learning and Teaching Geography in Higher Education (INLT) and has led to four collections of papers published in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education.

Selection of Participants
Applicants should complete and submit the on-line form at: http://bit.ly/ISSOTL2012WritingGroups.
In the event of more colleagues applying to join the writing groups than there are places, selections will be made, so that as far as possible each group contains:
a) A wide international coverage
b) A mixture of junior and senior faculty and at least one student
c) A range of disciplines
Up to one member of each group will be accepted, who is only able to participate at a distance and cannot make the face to face meeting in October 2012.
To help selection each applicant is asked to provide a brief statement on how they will benefit from the experience and what they can contribute to their group. Each applicant can select a first and second choice of topics.
Individuals selected to participate in the writing groups will be required to register for the ISSOTL 2012 Conference.

HBCU Library Alliance 5th Membership Meeting – October 21-23, 2012 – New Orleans Marriott, Canal Street, (LA)
Greetings Colleagues,
Today I'm celebrating the
National Negro Business League. Organized by Booker T. Washington in 1900 and
housed at Tuskegee University for many years, the league was designed to
promote the financial development of African Americans.
The League also promoted the
economic advancement of African Americans, via a network of state and local
Negro business leagues, and affiliated professional and trade organizations.
Membership in the League was open to any member of the race in good standing in
his or her community, whether the person was in business, professional or
private life. Meetings provided a forum in which African-American small
businessmen shared stories of their struggles and successes.

The HBCU Library Alliance 5th
Biennial Membership Meeting will convene in historic New Orleans, LA on Sunday
through Tuesday, October 21-23. This year’s theme, “Protecting our Legacy, Preserving
our Story: A Decade of Investment in HBCU Libraries” speaks to
our progressive work in support of HBCU libraries. In addition to celebrating
our tenth year of service to HBCU libraries, please come prepared for a
discussion on sustainability and the future direction of our great
organization.
Photographic Preservation
Pre-Conference – October 21st
All are invited to attend the Sunday, October 21st
Photographic Preservation Pre-Conference. The Pre-Conference will provide
additional education on photograph preservation, pairing HBCU demonstration
project participants with project consultants to address topics in best
practices, preservation planning, risk assessment, and advocacy and
fundraising.The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is graciously funding this project which involves the preservation of significant photographic collections within HBCU’s. Our attendance at the pre-conference is a show of support to the HBCU project colleagues and a show of appreciation to the Foundation. As an incentive, the first fifty members who register for the pre-conference and Membership meeting will receive a $600.00 travel stipend. The stipend cannot be used for registration at the Membership meeting and will be mailed to the member’s institution after the Membership meeting. Only one stipend is allowed per member library.
