Legal Issues in Higher Education Conference - Registration Now Open!

CUR - ISSOTL Pre-Conference and Invitation to Present

Building on the successful meetings held prior to the ISSOTL conferences in Liverpool (2010) and Milwaukee (2011), the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) will be again be offering a pre-conference symposium at the ISSOTL 2012 conference in Hamilton, Canada.

This year’s symposium is entitled: UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND CHANGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A SCHOLARLY DISCUSSION.  In this day-long symposium we plan to explore how undergraduate research effects change in Higher Education, and how a variety of changes in Higher Education affect undergraduate research. Posters will play key roles in this seminar.

We are interested in posters about undergraduate research and inquiry, focused on the theme and subthemes of the symposium:

• Students as change agents
• Undergraduate research generating transformative learning
• The role of undergraduate research in curriculum renewal
• The influence of technological changes on undergraduate research
• The influence of changing student demographics on undergraduate research
• Supporting and sustaining UR in times of times of fiscal challenge

The Dillard University Theatre Program will continue its 76th season this month with a six-show run of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, Ntozake Shange’s award-winning 1975 drama. The show opens Friday, March 23 at 8 p.m. in Dillard’s Cook Theatre and runs through Sunday, April 1. The play uses poetry and dance to tell the story of seven women and their struggles with love, faith and abuse. “The audience will experience the fears, joys, tears and laughter that all people can relate to,” says Patience Rayford, a Dillard alumna from the class of 2006, who is directing the production. “Ntozake Shange said, ‘Where there is woman, there is magic.’ That’s what we hope to bring to our audience.” Before each performance, the cast and crew will pay tribute to a different woman from the greater New Orleans community as part of a new initiative, created by Rayford, called For NOLA Girls. Honorees will be selected for their work as social activists and entrepreneurs, and their influence in the community. Tickets are $15, and $10 for seniors and students. The Chi-Lites to Perform at Dillard University’s
Pre-Commencement Concert on May 3

(NewOrleans) Legendary R&B group the Chi-Lites will headline Dillard University’s Pre-Commencement Concert on the evening of May 3. The concert will be held at 8 p.m. on the Avenue of the Oaks on Dillard’s campus, two days before the class of 2012 graduates. Dillard University’s Concert Choir will perform songs with the Chi-Lites.

One of the preeminent soul vocal groups of the 1970s, the Chi-Lites have scored more than 10 chart-topping hits throughout a career that has spanned more than half a century. Today the Chi-Lites are led by Marshall Thompson, who founded the group in Chicago in 1959.

2012 Annual Tegrity Lecture Capture Survey Indicates Big Impact Nationwide survey gathered more than 11,000 responses from students using Tegrity

Tegrity Campus is an award-winning cloud-based lecture capture solution that scales affordably campus-wide. Tegrity recently conducted a nation-wide survey of more than 11,000 students, probing their individual experiences and outcomes as a result of Tegrity use.

In the survey, students reported a significant impact in their study effectiveness, understanding of material, motivation to study and overall grades.

The results of the study not only support the strong interest Tegrity’s lecture capture technology has generated on campuses around the country, but also the impact that Tegrity can make on student retention and satisfaction through greater academic achievement. One of the most compelling findings was that 72% of those surveyed felt that Tegrity helped them earn a better grade in their course.

Colleges and universities struggling with dwindling budgets and smaller endowments are increasingly turning to outsourcing faculty in order to cut costs.
“Colleges and universities have effectively been outsourcing instruction for decades now by utilizing part-time and adjunct faculty members,” says Craig Smith, deputy director of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Higher Education Division. “However, as college costs continue to rise and as a result student debt after college becomes unmanageable, more and more students and their families are beginning to ask why increased cost is occurring at the same time as investment in direct instruction has decreased.”
With high unemployment and an average state budget shortfall estimate of –16.9%, most state public universities faced significant budget cuts for the 2011 school year, according to a study conducted by US News and World Reports.
Both Florida Atlantic University and Missouri State University recently partnered with the Poynter Institute, a non-profit journalism training group, to outsource their online journalism classes.
“FAU's decision to participate in the pilot program was based on the forward-looking vision of its journalism program, with its focus on multimedia journalism in a convergent digital media landscape,” says Eric Freedman, assistant dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University.
Although colleges argue that outsourcing professors and academic programs are beneficial to both the students and the school, some worry this cost-saving measure can taint a school’s reputation and take away from the students’ learning experience.
What this means for schools
While Missouri State University decided not to continue its relationship with Poynter because students weren’t writing as much as it wanted, the school isn’t giving up on outsourcing staff.
