Student Rap Session

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Georges Auditorium in the PSB

 

Rhyming lyrics and verses in time to a beat/melody, rapping has worked its way from reggae and into mainstream and alternative rock music. Spoken to a beat, either with backing of music or a capella, rap is a complex mix of influences, and typically includes elements of speech, prose, poetry and song (WIKI How). At this session, Dillard students perform above expectations by getting in front of the influences.  Listen as students incorporate principles of mathematics in their own rap lyrics.  If you appreciate the art form and you are ready for a good time, this Rap Session is for you!

Writing Center Information from the Director

 

The Dillard University Writing Center faculty and consultants are ready to assist students with a variety of writing tasks from art reviews and biology lab reports to composition essays and psychology research papers. 

 

For more information on how we can help your students, please refer to the reference guide, The Faculty Guide to the Dillard University's Writing Center, or talk with one of the Writing Center staff members. Also, here is additional information you will find useful as some of your students may use the Writing Center.

 

Location: The Dillard University Writing Center is located in Dent Hall, Room 162. 

 

Spring 2013 Hours: Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

  

Workshops:  In addition to individual and small-group consultations, we offer a series of workshops throughout the semester on grammar, documentation form, and even proofreading. The workshops are conducted in Dent 162 during the times listed on the workshop schedule. 

 

Referrals: If you need to refer students to the Writing Center, please complete the Student Referral Form and ask the student to bring it to the Writing Center when he/she schedules an appointment. 

 

Classroom Visits: The Writing Center director and consultants are willing to visit individual classrooms to discuss our services with your students. If you want to schedule a visit, please call or email me. When you call for an in-class visit, please give us the course, the location, and the time you’d like us to visit.

Introduces a Lecture Series on Multi-Culturalism

Faculty Learning Communities: Creating, Connections Among Students, Faculty,
And Disciplines

Both in structure and focus, Faculty Learning Communities create a necessary construct for a cultural transformation of teaching and learning that invites all to achieve their intellectual and social potential.

We know that Faculty Learning Communities can provide a powerful means of serving an increasingly diverse student population. Faculty Learning community approaches, properly constituted, can readily address diverse learning styles. They can be used to dramatically increase student retention, especially among our most vulnerable student populations.

Finally, and most important, faculty learning communities face the challenge of purpose. Many learning communities begin in a flurry of enthusiasm without clear goals or planning. This is not a bad thing. It’s typical of innovations. But if the effort is to last and have a significant impact on an institution, the institution needs to come to a common understanding about why they are doing faculty learning communities and organize appropriately to support them.

To that end, we cordially invite faculty to come out and join a discussion surrounding formulating inter-disciplinary faculty learning communities that reflect our students, faculty and disciplines.

Happy New Year to each of you.  I hope that your holidays were lovely, and that you are looking forward to a productive semester of learning and collaboration.

 

The Center for Academic Excellence at Fairfield University is hosting its 12th Annual Conference on Innovative Pedagogy and Course Redesign (May 29 – 31, 2013).  We celebrate and showcase excellence and innovations in all areas of teaching, faculty support and development, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and community-engaged teaching and scholarship. Our theme this is year Collaborations for Empowerment and Learning.   To this end, we have invited wonderful featured presenters to work with the attendees on areas of deep resonance for higher education teaching and learning (mentoring networks, peer review and publication of engaged scholarship, SoTL and collaboration as a tool for teaching).   Our Keynote Presenter is Dr. Mary Deane Sorcinelli, who plans a highly interactive session on mutual mentoring.  Drs. Kathy Jordan and Cathy Burack will address peer review and scholarly aspects of community-engaged work, and Dr. Katie Linder will focus on collaborations as tools for learning and teaching.  

 

We see this annual conference as an opportunity to learn from each other, to build connections and collaborations and to reflect upon the meaningfulness and impact of our work as educators and scholars.
