 Understanding
      the medieval mind
 What do
      calendars show about the medieval world-view?
 Two AHRC research projects are examining medieval Jewish texts about
      astronomy and calendars, touching on a wide range of related disciplines
      including, mathematics, literature, palaeography (the study of writing)
      and codicology (the study of books).

 Taking the
      pulse of the planet
 Gauging the
      changing emotions of last year's Olympic Games
 emoto captured 12.5 million English language updates to Twitter which
      referenced the Games during Olympic fortnight, and analysed them for
      'sentiment' by parsing for positive or negative language.

 Fellowships
      Scheme
 Change for
      applicants on part-time contracts
 From 1 August 2013, the minimum and maximum durations for the scheme for
      applicants on part-time contracts will change. The duration limits will
      be pro-rata the limits for those on FTE contracts, e.g. the maximum
      duration for someone on a 0.5FTE contract will be 36 months for the
      standard route and 48 months for the Early Career route.
 
 Follow on Fund
      for Impact and Engagement scheme
 Have you
      had previous RCUK or AHRC funding?
 Would you like to engage with, and inform, non-academic audiences or work
      with new partners? The Follow on Fund for Impact and Engagement scheme is
      designed to support innovative and creative engagements with new
      audiences and user communities which stimulate pathways to impact and
      offers awards of up to £100,000 (fEC).

      International Placement Scheme Fellowships Announced
 Awards at
      Washington, California and Japan
 Fifty one awards have been made under the International Placement Scheme
      (IPS), for short-term fellowships at overseas research institutions for
      AHRC/ESRC-funded PhD students and Early Career Researchers.

Knowledge
      Exchange Fellowship opportunityCloses on
      9th August, 2013
 The AHRC in partnership with Wired Sussex is looking to recruit a
      Knowledge Exchange Fellow to be based at the FuseBox, an exciting new
      business support initiative in Brighton. Developed from the AHRC funded
      Brighton Fuse project this is a unique opportunity for a suitably
      qualified researcher to become a fully embedded Researcher-in-Residence
      to help shape and deliver new models of business support and new
      approaches to co-creation, innovation and growth for the creative,
      digital and IT (CDIT) sector and to develop new methodologies of
      knowledge exchange between arts and humanities research and business.

 Collaborative Skills Development
 Call open.
      Closes 19th September 2013
 The AHRC is inviting PhD students, early career researchers and Research
      Organisations to apply for funding to support innovative training in the
      arts and humanities. Applications are encouraged in three areas:
      Partnership working, including public engagement; Entrepreneurship and
      the Creative Economy; and Research Skills Enrichment.

 Collaborative Doctoral Awards
 Call opens
      on 5th August 2013
 The Collaborative Doctoral Award Call application is available in JeS
      from 5th August. These are intended to encourage and develop
      collaboration and partnerships between Higher Education Institution (HEI)
      departments and non-academic organisations and businesses. The deadline
      for applications is 3rd October 2013.

 Digital R&D Fund for the Arts
 Big Data
      call open
 The Digital Research & Development Fund for the Arts is a partnership
      between Arts Council England, the Arts & Humanities Research Council
      (AHRC) and the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts
      (NESTA). The £7 million fund supports collaboration between organisations
      with arts projects, technology providers, and researchers that use
      digital technology to enhance audience reach and/or develop new business
      models for the arts sector. We have recognised that there are some
      important and emerging areas of interest in Big Data and data sharing for
      arts organisations. To address this we are issuing a separate Call within
      the R&D Fund for consortium projects, in the area of data sharing and
      Big Data specifically in the context of business model innovation. We are
      looking for applications from partnerships that involve consortia of arts
      organisations, a technology partner and a research partner.

 Could your

 The Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement Scheme (FOF) provides
      funds to: explore unforeseen pathways to impact; enhance the value of
      AHRC-funded research beyond academi,a and to encourage and facilitate a
      range of innovative and creative engagements between arts and humanities
      research and a variety of user communities to include, business and
      commercial, third sector and heritage sector, public policy, voluntary
      and community groups and the general public.

 The purpose of this highlight is to stimulate the development of
      innovative proposals under the Research Networking Scheme which explore
      issues of current public policy interest, bringing together arts or
      humanities researchers with policy makers and wider policy bodies.
