School Bullying: How to Build a Bully-Free Campus and Staff TOMORROW!
September 12, 2012 @ 1 PM (ET)
Every year approximately 30% of U.S. students are involved in school bullying, either as a target or as a bully, or both. Furthermore, adults who are working in school systems often find themselves being bullied by parents, staff, teachers, principals, and administrators. And just like student bullying, this behavior causes emotional harm and reduced work performance which can undermine the learning environment for students. Please join us as we take you through the process of developing effective strategies and a step-by-step plan for training, reporting, investigating, and providing a bully-free environment not just for your students but also for your teachers and staff.

NEXT WEEK -- DON'T MISS IT!
Managing Disabilities in the School and University Setting: How New ADAAA Requirements Affect Section 504
September 19, 2012 @ 1 PM (ET)

Recent amendments to the ADA and Rehabilitation Act will make it easier for students and their watchful parents and guardians seeking protection under the ADA to establish a disability and obtain protections and accommodations under Section 504. The penalties for not being in compliance can be substantial, and the risks come from both the government as well as watchful parents and guardians. Please join us for a clear overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and accompanying regulations, as well as for a review of special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In addition we will also provide specific instruction to K-12 school and university administrators on their obligations under the new laws and regulations.

The Use of Social Media by Schools, Students and Staff: Know the Risks and How to Reduce Your Potential Liability
October 17, 2012 @ 1 PM (ET)
The use of social media in schools is an evolving area that brings into play various state and federal laws and regulations. From conducting social media background checks on prospective employees to disciplining students for activity on- and off-campus on social media sites, the use of technology has changed the way people work and communicate. Please join us as we guide you through the potential problem areas when social media is used by schools, students, and staff, as well as precautions that schools must take to avoid violating the rights of students and staff communicating in this manner.

How to Write an Effective Anti-Harassment Policy and Related Procedures to Include
October 24, 2012 @ 1 PM (ET)

Whether harassment happens on campus, in the classroom and halls, or somewhere else -- you may still have a legal liability and an ethical responsibility to investigate harassment claims. Failure to respond in a timely manner can often expose the institution not only to potential legal liability, but can also lead to the escalation in the level of harassment. In this type of climate faculty and administrators need to be proactive, and the first step is an effective anti-harassment policy that is reviewed and updated regularly. Please join us as we offer guidance on what you should and shouldn't include in your school anti-harassment policy and provide important step-by-step guidance for how to respond to the harassment complaints you will inevitably receive.

Constitutional Protections of Employees During Misconduct Investigations
November 1, 2012 @ 1 PM (ET)
Investigations of employee misconduct by school officials can be complicated and involve constitutional protections that are not available to private sector employees. The school official who is not aware of these constitutional protections before beginning an investigation may run the risk of jeopardizing the investigation and could possibly even be undermining a related investigation by law enforcement. Please join us as we take you through the underlying case law and offer school administrators practical, step-by-step guidance for conducting an effective employee investigation without violating the constitutional rights of the employee being investigated.

Exempt or Non-Exempt Educator and Administrator Classification: How to Make Sure You're in Compliance with FLSA Requirements STAY IN COMPLIANCE!
November 7, 2012 @ 1 PM (ET)
The Department of Labor (DOL) has begun a crackdown against all employers -- including schools and universities -- for improper classification of workers as exempt when the employee is actually non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The risk of getting the classification decision wrong concerns not only the DOL but also possible employee litigation. Please join us as we show you step-by-step how to determine when your teachers, faculty, and administrators are exempt or non-exempt based on FLSA requirements.
