Scholarship Information | Nomination Form (Word doc)
The John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards is presented to senior-level (see option 2 on criteria form) minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. Each recipient will receive a $10,000 grant.
Among the criteria will be (1) full-time status as a senior at the time of nomination OR an undergraduate degree with two years work experience, preferably in athletics administration; (2) minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale); (3) official classification as a minority as defined by federal guidelines; (4) intention to attend graduate school to earn a degree in athletics administration; and (5) involvement on the college/university or community level.
To be eligible, students must meet the federal guidelines for definition as a minority. This definition is from Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which uses Equal Employment Opportunity Form EEO-1. The definition is as follows: (a) Black (Not of Hispanic origin) -- All persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa; (b) Hispanic -- All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture of origin, regardless of race; (c) Asian or Pacific Islander -- All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands and Samoa; or (d) American Indian or Alaskan Native -- All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition. Students who are ! not of the listed origins, but have married someone of the listed origins, are not eligible.
Top administrators in the field of athletics will vote upon the finalists, while a panel of leaders in the fields of business, sports, entertainment and politics will select the overall winners.
The nomination form must be signed and approved by the student's academic advisor or supervisor.
Even though your seniors may be the recipients of other postgraduate awards this year, they are still eligible for this award, and we urge you to submit your paperwork as quickly as possible. The nominations will be sent to a Review Committee of collegiate athletics administrators and their top candidates will be sent to a Blue Ribbon Committee that will choose the final five winners.
Please note all nomination forms must be received in the NACDA office (not postmarked) by Friday, April 29, 2011. Nominations cannot be accepted after this date. Nominations may be mailed, faxed or sent by overnight mail. However, only submit the nomination form by one of the above methods.
Please complete the form (typed only) in its entirety. This will prevent us from having to call with any questions and ensure the best possible opportunity for your students. Please attach additional sheets as necessary. Also note, students who have already graduated will be eligible. See the criteria form (option 1) for details.
If you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to call or e-mail Katie Newman in the NACDA office, knewman@nacda.com or 440-892-4000.
