Six-Show
Run Set for March 23 – April 1 in Cook Theatre;
New
Orleans Women to Be Honored Before Each Performance
(New
Orleans) The Dillard University Theatre Program will continue its 76th
season this month with a six-show run of For Colored Girls Who Have
Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, Ntozake Shange’s award-winning
1975 drama. The show opens Friday, March 23 at 8 p.m. in Dillard’s Cook Theatre
and runs through Sunday, April 1.
The
play uses poetry and dance to tell the story of seven women and their struggles
with love, faith and abuse. “The audience will experience the fears, joys,
tears and laughter that all people can relate to,” says Patience Rayford, a
Dillard alumna from the class of 2006, who is directing the production.
“Ntozake Shange said, ‘Where there is woman, there is magic.’ That’s what we
hope to bring to our audience.”
Before
each performance, the cast and crew will pay tribute to a different woman from
the greater New Orleans community as part of a new initiative, created by
Rayford, called For NOLA Girls. Honorees will be selected for their work as
social activists and entrepreneurs, and their influence in the community.
Rayford
is available for interviews, as are other members of the show’s cast and crew.
Tickets
are $15, and $10 for seniors and students. For ticket information, call the
Dillard University Box Office at (504) 816-4857. Several school matinees will
also be produced.
