University Business: Envisioning University Of Future, In Person Or Online

Will the university of the future be bigger — or smaller? Are college campuses still cradles of revolt — or merely marginal spectators to the Arab Spring? Should students expect to be trained for the job market — or is it more important to learn how to think?

Fortunately, the organizers of the “Reinventing Higher Education” conference held here last week didn’t try to force the participants to come to any consensus. Instead, Santiago IƱiguez, the conference host and president of IE University here, seemed to relish his role as provocateur-in-chief, predicting that tuition fees would continue to rise, while the duration of academic programs would shrink.

“Rather than always talking about profits versus nonprofits we might talk about research universities versus big education retailers,” he said, adding that as global competition for students and faculty increased, successful universities would “grow by mergers and acquisitions.”

David Van Zandt, who became president of The New School in New York last month, disagreed, arguing that there would always be a demand for smaller institutions offering specialist teaching and expertise, giving the example of Parson’s, the New School’s art and design college. When Nigel Thrift, vice chancellor of the University of Warwick in Britain, suggested that there was only room for 50 leading research universities in the world, Mr. Van Zandt disagreed with him as well, suggesting that “a much smaller number” of research universities could expect to survive the combined pressures of shrinking public subsidy and growing global mobility. The increasing quality of online learning would also be a factor, he said.

Courseload: Any Textbook. Any Content. Any Device.

Introducing Courseload
The cost of textbooks has risen twice as fast as other costs in higher education. Research indicates that more than one-third of all students go without one or more textbooks each year, driving students, parents, faculty, and school leaders to actively look for ways to cut textbooks costs. Courseload offers an electronic version of any textbook on any web-enabled device for one-third to one-half of the price of a traditional printed textbook.

Student Benefits
With Courseload, students see up to a 70% reduction in the cost of new textbooks. All course materials are accessible through any web-based device (Laptops, iPads, Android devices, Smartphones, etc) taking the bulk out of the backpack. Students say they learn more from an e-textbook read on Courseload. Cheaper, lighter, and better for learning. No wonder three quarters of students prefer Courseload to traditional textbooks.

Instructor Benefits
Courseload’s faculty dashboard enables new ways to teach and understand how students learn with real-time analytics and note sharing. Choose any textbook, workbook, article, publication, or video you like; we can handle it. Want to incorporate multimedia materials into your courses? We can do that too. Digital course materials provide the ultimate flexibility for instruction.

School Benefits
Looking for a solution that provides a school-wide cost reduction, improves your ability to compete and supports green efforts? Campus Technology: Google Adds Real-Time Collaboration, More than 50 New Features to Presentations

By Joshua Bolkan 10/18/11

Goggle Docs has updated its presentation tool with real-time collaboration and more than 50 new features.

"Presentations are made to be shared--whether it's presenting your thesis to your professors or inspiring colleagues at a conference," according to a post on the Official Google Blog. "And the best presentations are made together, collaborating with others to build a compelling story that captivates your audience."

Features designed to facilitate collaboration include:
The ability to see what other team members are working on with presence markers;
Simultaneous editing from remote locations;
The ability to track changes and who made them or revert to an earlier version of a presentation through revision history; and
Built-in chat.

Other new features include:
Transitions, including fades and 3D effects;
Animations;
The ability to draw charts, designs, layouts and more;
New themes; and
Rich tables, with merged cells and other options.

The company says that the new features will roll out gradually, though some are available now. Start using the latest version of Google presentations by clicking on the gear icon in the documents list and then checking the box next to "Create new presentations using the latest version of the presentation editor" in the editing tab.

Also according to the Official Google Blog, "Many of the new features were built using technologies that are only available in modern browsers. If you’re using an older browser you’ll be able to view, but not edit, the new presentations."

More information is available at googleblog.blogspot.com. A guide for getting started with presentations is available at http://docs.google.com/
