Application deadline:  Monday, April 16, 2012

The Faculty Resource Network (FRN) is pleased to announce an upcoming three-day institute entitled “The Academy and the Community,” which will take place from June 20-22, 2012, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Institute, which will be hosted by the Center for Puerto Rico, will consist of two seminars on issues around communication and collaboration between colleges and universities, and the communities that surround them.  The seminars will focus on “Citizenship” and “Empowering Women,” both topics of great interest to FRN and to the Center of Puerto Rico, which has among its primary objectives strengthening ethical values and social responsibility, and advancing the role of women in society.

The seminar on Citizenship, to be led by Jorge Benitez, professor of social work at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, will examine how academia is promoting social responsibility, civic engagement, and service-learning opportunities.  Participants will look at the following issues:  What does it mean to promote social responsibility and service learning among students?  How can we promote democracy in on our campuses and in our communities?  What does citizenship mean to communities of people who have entered the country illegally, and what is the best way to connect with these communities?  Many FRN institutions are wrestling with these issues on their own campuses and in their communities.

The seminar on Empowering Women will be co-convened by Beverly Guy-Sheftall, founding director of the Women's Research and Resource Center and Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies and English at Spelman College, and Margarita Benitez, co-director of Women’s Knowledge International.  This seminar will explore the connections between scholars of women’s studies and women activists—both points of intersection and points of friction.  Participants will discuss best practices for reconciling the work of scholars and activists, and bringing together their two bodies of knowledge in order to work effectively for change.

Faculty participants will be housed at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras.  Seminar sessions will be held at the Center for Puerto Rico.
