Dillard University CTLAT and This Week's Workshops - May 7-11, 2012

Good Morning!

By now, everyone has received the information regarding next week's workshops. I will ensure that assessments are prepared, but please confirm - among the group - who will be on hand to create and manage sign-in sheets (and send a scanned copy to the chairs as well as Academic Affairs), greet the speakers, walk them to the location, introduce them, facilitate and wrap-up the workshops and escort our guests to their cabs. Colleagues,
Fair Dillard is at a cross-road and it is our responsibility – as the engaged faculty that we are – to cement its legacy as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. Many of you work tirelessly to craft intellectually stimulating syllabi and classroom experiences that offer students a dynamic experience. As Provost, I aspire to ensure that the university provides the resources necessary to build upon your work, strengthen Dillard’s brand as a small college whose graduates leave large footprints for others to follow. With that in mind, the Center for Teaching, Learning And Technology (CTLAT) writes to share details regarding next week’s Professional Development workshops (as indicated on the university’s Academic Calendar). Deans are asked to ensure maximum faculty attendance and participation. Faculty are reminded to sign-in, as this will become a part of your portfolio regarding scholarly service.

Each academic and administrative unit will be given an opportunity to briefly report on the status of their goals, as they relate to the Strategic Plan. Presenters are asked to (1) open the “Share Out” attachment for the format, (2) enter the information and (3) email it to me by Tuesday, May 8.

George Rehrey is Principal Instructional Consultant with Indiana University’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, where he directs the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Program, advising and supporting faculty of all ranks as they conduct classroom research, form communities of inquiry and disseminate their work locally, nationally, and internationally. Peggy L. Maki is a higher education consultant who specializes in assisting undergraduate and graduate colleges and universities, higher education boards, higher education organizations, and disciplinary organizations integrate assessment of student learning into educational practices, processes and structures. Her work also focuses on assessment within the context of accreditors' expectations for institutional effectiveness. See the “Maki Bio” attachment for more details.

Wednesday, May Dr. A. Kathy Burlew, SoTL Summer Research Institute (CTLAT Mini Grant Program), 1st Floor Computer Lab, 2nd Floor Distance Learning Center
16 – 18 Dr. Kathy Burlew is a Distinguished Psychologist of The Association of Black Psychologists and Professor (University of Cincinnati), Author, and former editor of The Journal of Black Psychology. Dr. Burlew research interests are HIV research with substance abusing populations ; Substance abuse prevention and treatment;
Issues in research, practice, and treatment with African Americans; and Health disparities research methods.
